Song for the Visitation

Since the Divine Office online that I follow reminded me that today is the feast of the Visitation, it brought to mind a song that I knew from days gone by about the Visitation, called "The Visit".  Actually it is the only song or hymn that I know about it.  And it turns out that it is a fairly obscure one; it doesn't appear in the missalette or music editions.  There aren't many YouTube videos of it, but there is this one:

(1) She Walked in the Summer - Bing video

From the decorations in the church where the video takes place, it was the Christmas season, even though the feast is today, May 31st.

The author of the song is Sister Miriam Therese Winter, (Miriam Therese Winter - Wikipedia) who has written some other music.  But her primary vocation has been that of a Medical Mission Sister, where she has served in several mission countries.

The words to the song are these:

"She walked in the summer through the heat on the hill.
She hurried as one who went with a will.
She danced in the sunlight when the day was done.
Her heart knew no evening Who carried the Son.

Fresh as a flower at the first ray of dawn,
She came to Her cousin whose morning was gone.
But there leapt a little child in the ancient womb
And there leapt a little hope in every ancient tomb.

Hail, little sister, who heralds the spring.
Hail, brave Mother, who carries the King.
Hail to the moment beneath Your breast.
May all generations call You blessed."

When your wound with the wind and one with His will – be brave
with the burdens, you are blessed to bear, for it’s Christ that you carry
everywhere, everywhere, everywhere.

  1. Very nice, Katherine! I love her voice and love the pianist. Sr. Miriam Therese Winter, a very long time ago, wrote "Joy Is Like the Rain". That was one of the songs we sang when I was a 4th grader, and then sometime later we were banned from singing the songs from that era/style.

    1. Speaking of songs from that era, last Sunday we sang "Here at the Table of the Lord" by Sebastian Temple, for a meditation. He wrote some good songs, even though he is out of fashion now.
