I was thirsty, and you gave me ...

They crossed the barren desert when nobody was leaving food and water out there for them.
They crossed the barren desert when some Americans left food and water out there.
They cross the barren desert, even if they don't know that someone is trying to keep them alive or, if they know, they also know the good Samaritans may not be successful
 I'm talking about immigrants.
A good Samaritan goes on trial today for trying to help. He faces 22 years in prison for having been caught with some immigrants, exactly the same as if he were one of the coyotes who "help" people make the crossing for money. There is also a first-person story by the dangerous Samaritan in today's Washington Post. The NPR story also covers a county attorney who may be indicted for the same offense.
The government's case is that if you don't give them water, they won't come. But they came before there was water. And they will keep coming even if your pubic employees achieve 100% effectiveness:
Their job includes finding the water jugs Samaritans put out in the desert, and dumping them. Aren't we lucky to be rich enough to pay people for jobs like that?

  1. Is this not an infringement on the religious freedom of Christians? Or us it just about insurance and contraceptives? Oh, and cakes and gay weddings?

  2. I was reading an article today about Betty Rendon Madrid, who has been deported to Columbia with her husband. She was studying to be a Lutheran (ELCA) minister. Apparently she had been denied asylum. She had recently undergone cancer treatment. She and her husband owned a home in Chicago, and their daughter who had protection under DACA, and a granddaughter lived with them. Now they are here alone.
Things like that, and the water jug dumpers, make it hard to be proud of America right now.

  3. This sad, sad story is evidence of how very far the USA has fallen. As a country, we once had some human empathy, we had values. So, now the Good Samaritan is to go to prison, while the people on the taxpayers' payroll conspire to deny people the water they need to survive. Is that not a form of conspiracy to murder?

    1. Anne (and Tom) I couldn't agree more. I was thinking about this while watching our town's Memorial Day parade a few days ago. Our country is great because of immigrants - the connection is direct and should be obvious to all. It makes me feel physically ill to think about our country and its current stance toward immigrants. I've been around immigrants my entire life, in my family, in the parishes I've belonged to, in school, in the workplace. I work with people all over the world, not a few of whom still aspire to emigrate to the US. What the @#$%^& is wrong with these Trump supporters?

    2. They've mixed up terrorists, drug lords, foreigners, non-Christians, labor unions, non-Europeans, anti-Second-Amendment pansies, the deep state and the collectivist agenda, laced it with "America First," and rolled it all into the big fat joint they've been toking for two years. They're high as kites on this, and they're not coming down any time soon.

    3. Jean, I think you're right that some people are getting high on this, and they're enjoying it.

    4. I think Trump certainly is. He was high on the Birther Conspiracy for eight years, which was just a slightly different strain of the same dope.
