Taking a brief break from junk reading...

Ezra Klein at Vox has this today:

Amusing ourselves to Trump

We  are buried under ignorance disguised as information.

Nothing that hasn't been said here before, but a good comparison with Orwell and Huxley's metaphors back in the days of fascism.

  1. At the moment, the three biggest stories out there are:

    1. The government of the United States of America had NO PLAN and so apparently NO INTENTION of ever reuniting the children it kidnapped with their parents.
    2. Despite claims (I won't say where) that the planet is growing colder, climate change is slowly wiping out some agricultural industries (apples in Michigan) and creating others (grapes for red wines in Bernkastel, Germany, where formerly the best whites were fermented. They'll have to get grapes for Bernkasteler Doktor from Narvik the way things are going.

The first is being treated as routine. Fires in California. Angry judges in California. Lovesick Rhino attacks SUV. The second is being ignored.

    3. President admits collusion with Russia and maybe conspiracy as well. The details of that story are available but buried under the quotes because Bothsidesism.

    1. And the Prez is tweeting ignorant incoherent stuff about how the fires in California are caused by bad environmental laws which won't let them utilize "massive amounts of readily available water." And is ignoring his legal counsels' advice to cease twittering about the Mueller investigation.

  2. Here's the thing: when I think of fascists, I think of planners and schemers with a specific ideology.

Trump doesn't plan or scheme, and he has no ideology, just narcissism.

There is no evil genius behind the curtain. There is just an ego with a bottomless appetite for self-gratification.

What Trump does have in common with actual fascists is that they are all missing the conscience gene.

  3. When I think of fascism, I think of Black Shirts in Italy, Brown Shirts in Germany, and various other militias in Hungary, Bulgaria, Spain, etc. The planners and schemers (Stephen Miller, Bannon, Mulvaney, etc.) are beholden to types who run around beating people up, etc. Trump praises and presides!

    1. What about the white nationalists crawling out from under their rotting logs and dung piles throughout this country? They are fascists, impure and simpletons.

  4. Jean referred to her husband believing Trump needs a two-fisted male opponent. He didn't have one in the Republican Primary. He insulted Ted Cruz' wife's appearance (actually Fox News level looks) and associated his father with the Kennedy assassination. At the next debate, he should have walked right up to Trump and demanded an apology. Not getting one, he should have punched him in the face. He might be president today. Instead, he rolled over to the alpha male. These guys pretend to be macho but they have no guts.
