Hey, he is illegal. OK?

What should you do when you encounter a 22-year-old with Down syndrome and diabetes while raiding a business looking for non-citizens here illegally?
Slap him in a detention facility with all the other Guatemalans without passports. Like the others, he can look forward to his case coming up in maybe a few months and then being deported to Guatemala, where he has no family.
Immigration and Customs Enforcement carefully explains:

“ICE conducts targeted immigration enforcement in compliance with federal law and agency policy. However, as ICE Acting Director Thomas Homan has made clear, ICE does not exempt classes or categories of removable aliens from potential enforcement. All of those in violation of the immigration laws may be subject to immigration arrest, detention and, if found removable by final order, removal from the United States.”
Yes, you lock them up. There are stories like this one, from the Miami Herald, almost daily. It takes a special kind of person to work for ICE.

  2. Some things are too upsetting to comment on. Let me just say this: seems there is plenty of blame to go around. Starting with ICE agents, ICE administrators, the president, his advisers, and both parties in Congress.

  3. Did anyone read this article on the America site? It is entitled "Miscarriages Are Happening in ICE Custody. Will the Pro-life Movement Respond?" To be fair I believe a lot of pro-lifers would be concerned about this. But it is depressing to read the comments after the article. One commenter said that miscarriages occur anyway, and how can we know it is because of being in ICE custody? Well, it seems like a no-brainer that extremely stressful conditions would increase the danger of miscarriage. And studies back this up, citing up to 42% increase of miscarriage in stressful conditions, especially if medical care is sketchy or non-existent. Not to mention a failure to diagnose such things as pre-eclampsia, which could be life threatening.
Other commenters blamed the situation on previous administrations failing to enforce a "rational immigration policy". Finger-pointing and whataboutism.
I can't remember a time when I was more ashamed of the human rights policies of our government.

    1. And of course there is the dog-whistle implication(sometimes outright stated) around ICE treatment of pregnant women that they want to avoid them giving birth in the USA because anchor babies. Not that it would cut any ice with ICE to separate mothers from babies, or deport them both.
