Trump & the Virus

My recent post HEADED TOWARD A THIRD PEAK linked to the NY Times graphs which showed the spread of the virus in space and time.  Around the beginning of August, I realized that after the second peak on July 19th at 66690 cases the spread of the virus was beginning to recede at an average rate of 1.5% less per day.  Indeed "it was going away", and if it had continued to go away new cases would have been done to around 15,000 new cases per day by election day.

By September 11th cases were down to a running seven day mean of 31799 cases per day just as predicted. However on that day its downward trend was reversed and an upward trend at the rate of 2% per day began. If that rate continues we will reach a running seven day average of over 87000 cases per day by election day. A new high was reported for yesterday of 85085 new cases, so that there is a good chance that will happen.

So while the virus is not going to go away, it may have been possible on September 11, if we had already implemented more testing and case following, to actually bring the virus levels down to 15000 cases. If the Trump administration had endorsed rather than opposed these measures, he might now be in the position to claim that victory is in sight. Instead, at least some and perahps many very bad months are ahead. Unless we get a successful vaccine, or are willing to go into extreme lockdowns, our only other hopes are that the virus recedes next summer and/or herd immunity develops at far lower levels than most experts think.

  1. Philip Bump had a statistical analysis of pandemic numbers trying to establish that Trump could not be held responsible for all 220K deaths, but that tens of thousands of deaths might have been prevented at certain points and could be prevented in the winter months ahead.

I expect the holidays will be a disaster--crowded stores and church services, people doing more travelling and visiting, more people picking up a second temporary holiday job to try to make ends meet, and uncompliant college students bringing bugs home for break and taking them back to campus.

    1. I would agree that Trump isn't responsible for all the deaths. What he is responsible for is politicizing the response to the virus, thereby causing a lot of deaths that didn't have to happen.
And you are right that the holidays will be a big problem. We're trying to figure out how we're going to do them. Especially given that one set of our kids' in-laws are your MAGA Trumpy types and will do their holidays as usual. I hate being the picky distancing grandparents, one creates memories one way or the other. Kind of hard to do Thanksgiving dinner out on the deck in Nebraska.

    2. Speaking of the holidays, I could get out the Christmas carols this morning: "..snow had fallen, snow on snow..."

    3. Yes, politicization. How many people have died because Trump made wearing a mask a sign of "weakness"?

Even if Biden wins the election, we'll still have three more months of Trump. Cops just rounded up some nutty kid who was within four miles of Biden's house with a van full of guns, and I suspect a lot of other unstable types are out their plotting stuff. Mitch McConnell is laying his gridlock plans against a Biden win. So I won't be singing Happy Days Are Here Again for the foreseeable future.stuff

Holidays? We're not planning anything for this year.

  2. Tom B., what do you hear from your granddaughter in Taiwan? Are they still doing well with their virus statistics?

    1. Still only seven deaths. Still taking temperatures in the morning and and afternoon. Still giving tests to people with high temps and getting them back within two or three hours. Still quarantining people who flunk their tests. Still wearing masks everywhere. Still not much night life.

Nobody claiming a constitutional right to go maskless. Nobody crowding together to listen to political rants. No big parties.

Not much fun, but no misery.

    2. From what I am reading, it sounds like they never did have a total lockdown, but instituted "no exceptions" precautions. And did pretty well in spite of being excluded from WHO because the mainland says they are a rogue province.

    3. Katie says the lockdowns never became total. The main thing, she says, is everybody is doing what they are told they should do.

The first I knew the N95 masks were the Tiffany's of maskdom was when she tried to stock up before she went back on the (correct) guess that they would be in short supply because of fires in Australia and California. What American, living in Trumpdom where cold weather ends fires and hot weather ends viruses, would have thought of that?

  3. Trump's new policy, according to Mark Meadows is to let 'er rip until there's a vaccine for military to distribute. Trump says that's not accurate, which means that the adviser closest to the president doesn't know what the policy is on the nation's Issue Number One.
