She wouldn't do this....would she? I'm speaking of rumors that Hillary Clinton may be contemplating another run for the presidency. I don't believe she would be serious about it; she's many days late and many dollars short. It would make Trump's day if she pulled a party-splitting move like that. Hopefully she has more sense, even though she is probably still smarting over 2016
That story has the stale beer smell of wishful thinking from the bar where the mooseheads gather to hone the conventional wisdom. It is rather amazing how easily the White House sold the story that Bernie and Elizabeth are unelectable and Biden, unlike the incumbent, has family sucking money out of his position. And that the other 20whatever aren't worth a first look because... well, the mooseheads were looking at the Unelectable Three and didn't have time to find out who the others are. I blame it all on Theodore H. White.
ReplyDeleteYeah, it has that stale beer smell to me, too. I don't know how they can declare the top three "unelectable" at this point. And if they really are unelectable, I wish the mooseheads would explain how Hillary "is" electable, having been beaten last time. I realize the Electoral College cheated her, but what she needed was a decisive victory, and she didn't get one.
DeleteA few quotes from the NYTimes articles that is behind this one say it all
ReplyDelete"WASHINGTON — When a half-dozen Democratic donors gathered at the Whitby Hotel in Manhattan last week,
Democrats who have recently spoken with Mrs. Clinton say she shares the same concerns other party elites have about the field —
Yes the out of touch Democratic party elites are afraid that apart from Biden who is fading, they don't have a candidate in this race. As usual they are ignoring the young, the future of the party and our nation, who have two candidates that are just as popular as Biden.
"The young"...I think it's too soon to write off Buttigieg, Harris, and Klobuchar.
DeleteTrouble is, everybody thinks Trump must be eminently beatable, even though he won when "everybody" thought he couldn't.
DeleteAs for the young, neither "I can beat Trump in the upper midwest," which is Klobuchar, and "I can out-zing Trump on stage," which is Harris, gives a voter any feeling that tomorrow won't be just another day in a declining country. The Indiana flash possibly can beat Trump and holds out hope for something better, but I'd hate to have to live through the campign while Trump, the Evangelicals and our more backward bishops trash his sexual status.
For sure the evangelical right, and the culture war bishops will trash his sexual status. But they wouldn't be supporting any of the candidates the Democrats would run. So I'm not sure that would be a net loss. At least Pete B. can say that he is faithful to one person, which is way more than Trump can say.
DeleteTom: Buttigieg, like every other member of the LGBT communities, has learned a long time ago to expect nothing but disdain from the RC and fundigelical "holy Joes." I think The Don, the thrice adulterer "Republican" with the adulterer Catholic wife (a la New Gingrich) had better be careful about who he criticizes about what. That said, there appear to be way too many of these guys out there in fundigelical land: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bBcdRGpmsiQ
DeleteJimmy Mac, Pete Buttigieg may be better able to fight back than most. But I am afraid the Victorian Gentleman -- who has absorbed all you say about the adulterer-in-chief -- will rule everything Pete says on the subject -- as opposed to what is tweeted about him -- out of bounds.
DeleteI mean: Within the hour, NPR has repeated Trump's claim of victory in Syria (what Putin and Erdogan agreed with each other to do), along with his threat (unbacked up by rifles) that he will fight them if they do anything we don't like. If you feel compelled to repeat drivel like that because it comes from the president, what chance does a challenger have?
Tom: how low NPR has fallen these days!!!!
DeletePretty sure Tulsi won't be her running mate.
ReplyDeleteLOL! Jim, you're probably right. Still not sure what brought on that whole exchange. It didn't seem to reflect well on either of them.
DeleteThe thing is, it wasn't just Tulsi - it was her, Trump and Jill Stein who were subjects of that little conspiracy theory. That's quite a trio. Until now, I doubt any of them thought they had anything in common with the other two. Now they know there are two things: they are Russian stooges, and Hillary is paranoid about them.
DeleteI enjoyed this take-down of Hills in The Guardian: https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2019/oct/22/hillary-clinton-tulsi-gabbard-embarrassing-paranoid
ReplyDelete>>Clinton barely knew why she was running for president, couldn’t craft any kind of message, and made laughably overconfident decisions about where to campaign ...<<
Jean, I too enjoyed that takedown of Clinton, I think he pretty well nailed it why she didn't do better in '16. But didn't agree at all with the author's assessment of Biden and Buttigieg as "truly intolerable" candidates. Evidently he is a Bernie-ite. But the truly intolerable candidate is Trump, and the tolerable one is the person who can beat him. And I don't think it's Bernie.
DeleteIt will be interesting to see if Gabbard's candidacy is given a boost by the oh-so-popular Hillary Clinton's attack. If she becomes a more serious contender, it might be worth looking at her foreign policy concepts. They are complex and examined somewhat in
ReplyDeletehttps://www.truthdig.com/articles/the-uncomfortable-truth-about-tulsi-gabbard/
Thanks for that link, Stanley. Interesting article. It was a jerk move by Hillary Clinton. She just needs to go away and play with her grandchildren and plant a garden. But I think the article was right that Hillary's attack helped, rather than hurt Tulsi. Who is indeed complex. I find that the most troubling thing about her is that people such as Steve Bannon like her.
DeleteOff topic, Tom Blackburn, is Matt Gaetz (R-Fla) trying to knock Louie Gohmert out of first place for dumbest member of the House? I'm speaking of course about his "occupy the testimony" stunt.
ReplyDeleteOh, Catherine, we have so many. Ted Yoho (R-Fla) made a credible run at it, usuccessfully. I think Matt Gaetz is hoping to be the reincarnation of Newt Gingrich. First as tragedy, then as farce. But no one will become the dumbest member of the House as long as Louie can find his seat.
